First attempt:
|
In my opinion this photo turned out not so well. This is because, although the wrinkles of the old man have been merged in to the center of the younger persons face, the sides of his face and the right side of his forehead still looks like a young persons face. Another part of the image that didn't turn out well was the neck. This is because the neck is from the young person so it doesn't fit into the picture. The most successful part of this photo is how each facial feature is lined up as this makes the photo look slightly more realistic. One way I could of improved this image is if I made the young person open their mouth like the old man as this would of made it easier for me to line the images up and I could of made the opacity of the old mans face lower which would of blended the two faces better.

Second attempt:
|
I think that this image turned out slightly better than the first attempt as the two faces merged together well which made the picture more believable. Another reason this photo turned out better than the last one is because the whole face changed from the young persons skin to the old persons wrinkles and no areas where left out apart from the neck. I also think that these two portraits worked better as the facial expressions are very similar on both people and both of the photos where around the same size. The main problem with this photo is that you can still slightly see the eyebrows of the young person. To get rid of this I should of made the opacity of the old mans forehead higher to hide the eyebrows. In my opinion this was my most successful attempt.
|
Third attempt:
|
For my final attempt I tries to merge an old man wearing glasses with my face. This made the image harder to merge as the glasses were not the same width as my head. To fix this problem I had to select the glasses using the magic wand tool and copy then paste them so I could adjust the height and width of them. Like all the other attempts I was disappointed with how the neck turned out as it is still my neck which doesn't fit with the rest of the image or what I was trying to do. I could of improved this image by doing the same facial expression as the old man as in this attempt I didn't find the image until after I took the portrait if myself.

Irving Penn:
Irving Penn was a photographer from Plainfield, New Jersey who is famous for his fashion, still life and portrait photographs. Penn died in October 2009. The still life series that I am studying of his is called 'Cigarettes'. In this series Penn found used cigarettes on the street and brought them back to his studio. In his studio he would put the cigarettes on a plain white background and turn the discarded item into a piece of art.

JR:
JR is an artist and photographer from Paris, France. In his work he transforms parts of a building into a piece of art by pasting big pictures of people from the projects in Paris on to them. He says that one of his aims while making his work is to show the people who never go to museums his art. When I recreate his work I am going to try and Photoshop people onto on to buildings in London as I don't have the resources to paste large images onto buildings. If Photoshop doesn't work I will try to paste an image on to a small building as that is more realistic than using a block of flats like JR did in the photo on the right. This strand links to landscape transformation as I am transforming a building (landscape) into a piece of art.

Mike Tittel:
Mike Tittel is a commercial and advertisement photographer based in Utah. He specializes in sport, fitness and adventure photography. His clients include big companies such as PUMA, Pentax and Red Bull. The pieces of work that I am going to recreate are his sequences. Instead of making sequences of people skiing I will do skateboarders as you can't ski in London. This technique links to transformation of an object or person as it is showing the transition from one place to another. After creating a sequence with my photos I will experiment with GIFs as they also fit into this topic.

WWW/EBI/Next Set of Observations:
In these photos I recreated Mike Tittels sequence of the skier. In my opinion this attempt was successful because it looks like Mike Tittels. To improve this photo I could take the photos slower as some of the images in the middle overlap. Another way I could improve this sequence is by taking the photos from further away as I cropped out the top of the monument which makes the image look like something is missing. After making the sequence I made a GIF of the skater. This also went quite well but I could improve it next time. One way I could improve the GIF is by using a tripod. This is because the photos don't all line up so the border moves as the GIF goes along. For my next set of observations I will combine a few GIFs to create the effect of a journey through London. I will also create sequences of certain parts of the journey to go with the GIFs.

Harold Edgerton was a professor of electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is well known for his strobe light (stroboscope) photography like the photo on the right of a tennis player. To create this photo Edgerton took a long exposure photo of a tennis player swinging his racket while a strobe light is flashing to create the effect of a sequence like Mike Tittels skier. This is a development of the Mike Tittle strand as I am experimenting with different ways of creating sequences. |

WWW/EBI/Next time:
In the images below I tried to recreate Harold Edgerton's stroboscope photos. I think that the photos turned out successful as there was a few copies of the person in each photo. I also think that I could improve these photos by taking them in a darker studio because some of the photos were quite faint as the strobe wasn't as effective as it would be in a darker room. I could also make these images look more like Harold Edgerton's by taking them from closer to the skater or get a bigger black sheet behind him as the classroom in the background makes them look less like Edgerton's. If I was to retake these photos I would like to try out the technique in other locations lie central London at night.

WWW/EBI/Next time: In my opinion this edit turned out quite well as none the sections overlapped like my last set of observations. Another thing that went well is the shadows as most of them stayed in the picture unlike last time when some of the shadows in the middle of the image were cropped out. One way I could improve this image is by using a lower ISO and shutter speed as the photos turned out a bit pixelated. Another way I could of improved this image is by erasing the space around the first copy of the skater as there are two tones on the wall behind him. This makes him stand out and makes the image less realistic. If I was to retake this image I would go earlier on in the day as the last two copies of the skater blend in with the dark background. I would also try and find a stair set where I could take the pictures from the other side as it looks better if he is facing the camera.

WWW/EBI/Next time: I Also think that this edit turned out quite well as the different images of the skater are well spaced apart which means that they don't overlap. The main downside of this sequence is the first image. This is because it turned out a lot brighter than the other images so the shadow beneath him contrasts a lot with the background so he stands out too much. If I was to retake these images I would wait until there was no sun or no clouds as this is what made the first image brighter. I would also stand further back as the GIF would fit better in the full video if I got images of him rolling up to the bank and rolling away.

WWW/EBI/Next time: I think that this sequence turned out the best as lighting and quality of this picture are better than the others. Like the other the spacing of this sequence is also good. One way I could improve this image is by taking it from side on as this would fit better with the film. If I was to take these photos again I would tell the skater to try and roll straight out of the frame as this would of made the film flow better.

Ned GIF Movie from Louis De Wan on Vimeo. |
WWW/EBI/Next Time:
One thing that went well in this movie was the flow of the skater. This made the GIFs successful as it gives the film the feeling of a journey which is what I was trying to create whilst editing the GIFs. One way I could improve this film is by taking more photos for each GIF. This is because some of the GIFs ended too soon which made parts of the film quite jumpy. An example of this is the GIF of the bus as in the last image the skater was still in the frame. If I was to shoot this film again I would on a brighter day as some of the images turned out dark and the quality was bad in most of the GIFs. I would also do it until it turned dark as this would show the transformation from day to night.
